6. ACTION VERB EXPLORATION
One of the most practical acting tools.
Performers play actions—not emotions.

Exercise: Verb Roulette
Simple line:
  • "Can we talk?"
Students deliver it while trying to:
  • Persuade
  • Challenge
  • Comfort
  • Seduce
  • Threaten
  • Inspire
  • Shame
  • Reassure
The words stay the same.
The action changes.

Exercise B: Three Verbs
Assign three different actions to a monologue.
Example:
  • Beginning: To challenge
  • Middle: To persuade
  • End: To inspire
Students shift actions at each thought change.

Exercise C: Verb Ladder
Two performers play a scene.
Each round receives a new action:
  • Round 1: To comfort
  • Round 2: To manipulate
  • Round 3: To punish
  • Round 4: To rescue
Performers discover which verbs unlock the scene.

Exercise D: Action Battle
  • Partner A: "To convince"
  • Partner B: "To dismiss"
Play the scene.
Then switch actions.
This immediately creates conflict and playable behavior.
