4. SUBSTITUTION/PERSONALIZATION 
The goal is finding truthful emotional connections.
Important note: You should substitute emotions, relationships, or experiences—not attempt to relive trauma.
Exercise A: Relationship Mapping
Character says:
  • "I need you to stay."
Students identify someone in their own lives who creates a similar emotional dynamic.
Not necessarily the same person.
Just a similar feeling.


Exercise B: Parallel Experience
Ask:
  • "When have you wanted something this badly?"
The specifics may differ.
The emotional need remains similar.
Then perform the monologue/scene.

Exercise C: Emotional Translation
Apply this to your monologue/scene.
Character:


  • "My kingdom is being taken away."
You might translate as:

  • "I lost my starting position on the team."
Or:
  • "I didn't get cast."
The emotional stakes become accessible.
